We have just seen Dominique’s wonderful routine, with several phases, a diabolical routines with the famous « Duvivier’s touches » which make the all thing more and more impossible, and finally the cards can be examined.
When he is explaining, Dominique gives some credits about the sleights that you need to master such as the double and triple cut, the Elmsley count, Marlo’s turnover, the buckle count, the Flushtration count and this is almost all what is needed.
If some of them are unknown to you visit our website, look for « téléchargements », « vidéos manipulations de base », and you will get the information.
Otherwise the authors quoted are present through many books. I recommend for Marlo « The Cardician », to begin with; for Elmsley, « The Collected Work of Alex Elmsley » in two volumes; for Vernon, anything but « Vernon Chronicles » are a must.
Now anecdotally where does this name « Oil &Water » comes from? And how did it become so popular, though at the beginning it was considered as a mere puzzle for magicians. Sources differ, and as often we can find old trace.
The first one to mention the concept could be the famous Hofzinser, whose first name is Johann Népomuk, (July, 19 1806-March, 11 1875). You will find at http://www.lybrary.com a fantastic PDF about the tricks of this incredible creator. It seems that the first to publish a version of the trick was Walter Gibson, a prolific magician and author, (ghost writer of many books as well). It is in Annemann’s magazine, The Jinx, n° 91, May, 7 1940, that the first trick appears entitled « Like Seeks Like ».
The idea is there, but not the name. Edward Marlo coined the name and popularized it in his famous book « The Cardician », in 1953, you can also download it at www.lybrary.com
Since then all the specialists worked and found versions and I will skate over the subject. You will have to dig more. The divine Juan Tamariz wrote wonderful things about this in his famous book, « La Via Magica. He gives many hints about the theme, about the history of the trick, about the moves having an impact on the effect. He also mentions slowness as Dominique does so well in the video. Slowness is essential for a lay audience; it allows the effect to sink in. It is spellbinding, like Ravel’s Bolero, and it is a rare case where repetition creates strength.
Another giant who deeply understood that and took it to the extreme is the Maestro René Lavand. He created a one handed ballet with multiple repetitions called « No se puede hacer mas lento. O quisas???? » « you cannot go slower… or else » Each time the next sequence is neater and slower.
In short all the great cardicians love to deal with the mystery of Oil and Water. I will mention a few and Google will do the rest.
Darwin Ortiz, in « Scams and Fantasies »,Larry Jennings, in the video « Thoughts on cards », Bruce Cervon in « The black and White trick », Guy Hollingworth in « Drawing Room Deception » and « The London Collection »; Derek Dingle in « The Complete Works Of Derek Dingle » , Oil And Vinegar. Aldo Colombini, « Nice Salad »; John Bannon in « Smoke and Mirrors », Shake Well Before Using; Ray Kosby, in « Spectacle », at L&L Publishing, « Never The Twain Shall Mix »; Max Maven, (Phil Goldstein) in Focus, Mixant, and up and down Mixant and Chad Long, with a great version with a complete deck in the DVD « Lecture DVD » at International Magic Shop.
Dominique gave you new magic, invisible, secret tools in this package. His cards are so ingenious and are only waiting to live new exploits with your own creations. This is how life and ideas are passed on, ideas of improvement and creation. You shake them together knowing that always slowly or quickly oil and water will find their right place for the pleasure of the impossible.
